It turns out that you can estimate the strength of coffee by the content of caffeine in it. Most of all it is contained in Robusta – 2-4%, while in Arabica the caffeine content is no more than 1.7%. Thus, it turns out that Arabica cannot have such an invigorating effect as Robusta. But, based on practice, some varieties of Robusta have an invigorating effect to a lesser extent than Arabica. So what does coffee strength really depend on?

So, the strength is influenced by the caffeine present in the grain: the higher the percentage of caffeine, the stronger the coffee is. Robusta variety Uganda, India Pachment is recognized as the strongest – 100% Robusta. But because of the rich taste, 100% Robusta coffee beans, although used on their own, are more often included in various blends.

But which variety of Robusta will be stronger? It turns out that an important factor is the place where the coffee tree grows, in particular, the characteristics of the soil, climatic conditions, and the traditions of growing coffee in a particular region. For example, varieties from Arabia or Africa will be stronger than coffee from South America.

But how then to explain that some varieties of Arabica, less strong in terms of caffeine content, have an excellent invigorating effect? An example is Musonic Malabar – coffee with a mild, but rich, dense taste, in the aroma of which oriental spices, nutmeg, sweet pepper are captured. This 100% Arabica coffee is close to Robusta in taste characteristics, although the bean contains less caffeine. This effect is obtained due to a special method of fermentation under the influence of monsoons: after harvesting and processing, the grains are aged for several months under a humid monsoon wind.

Coffee blends – which are stronger

In addition to monosorts, there is a huge amount of coffee on sale, in which Robusta and Arabica are presented in different proportions. In this case, it should be borne in mind that when adding Robusta, the drink will be stronger than when using only Arabica. Thanks to perfectly matched varieties that enhance and complement each other, the unique flavors of the bouquet are revealed.

Cooking procedure. The longer the extraction, the higher the strength of the drink. With prolonged extraction, the maximum saturation of the drink with caffeine occurs. In addition, more ground grains increase the strength of the drink. It is also important to consider that milk or cream added to brewed coffee reduces its strength.
